When used with luxury vinyl tiles, floor accessories such as marquetry, grouting and feature strips offer broad scope for creating beautiful floor designs in the home.
One simple yet impressive effect that can be created is a traditional ‘ships decking’ look which is achieved by inlaying strips between plank lengths to give the illusion of long floorboards.

Marquetry strips are designed to complement wood effect flooring but grouting strips and feature strips can also be used to achieve the same effect. The solid colour feature strips offer a bolder and more graphic look, like the kitchen above which has been fitted with Camaro Vintage Timber.

The strips used to create a naval inspired ship’s decking floor can either complement or contrast with the flooring that has been used. Here the lighter Classic Oak marquetry strip beautifully contrasts with the dark Camaro Roasted Oak floor, picking out the more golden tones in the design and breaking up the space.

Here’s another example of lighter marquetry strips being used with a darker floor, but in this case two strip colours have been used with Colonia Kings Oak to create a more dramatic triple strip design.

Using a darker marquetry strip with a dark wood design like this Colonia Virginia Walnut is a subtle and sophisticated way of recreating the ships decking effect. The dark strips add depth and a 3-dimensional look to the floor.

Lighter wood tones can also work with the naval plank trend. Use a dark tone, like the Graphite grouting strip, to add definition to the planks of Colonia Nordic White Oak or Camaro White Limed Oak in scandi-style home interiors.

Grey flooring designs like Camaro Smoke Brushed Elm can also be used to create this same effect. The long lines created in this ships decking effect can help to create the appearance of a larger room and we like how the Coffee grouting strips used above help to draw the eye out into the garden.
